Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda has made a fervent appeal to Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to stop the infiltration of Indian fishing vessels into Sri Lankan territorial waters in the North.
The Indian EAM who was on a brief visit to Colombo met Minister Douglas Devananda at India House on Friday.
Minister Devananda told the Sunday Observer he had alerted the Indian EAM on the problems faced by the Northern fishermen due to the Indian fishermen infiltrating with their high powered fishing trawlers into the Northern waters.
According to Minister Devananda he had told the Indian Minister that the infiltration of the Indian fishing trawlers deep into the Lankan waters not only harms the livelihood of the Northern fisher folk but also damages the marine resources in the region.
