
President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the Government is studying Singapore’s legislation to regulate social media platforms including YouTube and Facebook in Sri Lanka.
He was speaking to newspaper Editors and News Directors of the electronic media on Friday, January 6.
Responding to a question about action to be taken by the Government regarding certain social media activists, the President said although there are laws in Sri Lanka for newspapers and electronic media, there is no legal framework to regulate social media.
President Wickremesinghe said that the Telecommunications and Social Media Act in use in Singapore will be studied to prepare a legal framework suitable for Sri Lanka.
