LG poll will cost Rs 10 billion – Election Commissioner General

25 December, 2022

The proposed Local Government Election will cost about Rs 10 billion, said Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake.

He said he discussed the cost of conducting the election with the Election Commission and applied for funding.

He said he would prepare estimates after nominations are called for the LG polls. This would include the cost of the ballot papers and payment for officials on election duty.

The election is to be held for 341 Local Government bodies, of which 24 will be Municipal Councils, 41 Urban Councils, and 276 Pradeshiya Sabhas. The poll will appoint 8,356 members to 341 Local Government bodies.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe had earlier said it would be appropriate to appoint 4,486 members to Local Government bodies, as it had been in 2018 and earlier.
