Lakshan Fernando was adjudged the best athlete in his age group at the 37th Annual Mercantile Athletic Championship that was held last weekend at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Representing MAS Holdings, Fernando won the Javelin throw and Putt Shot events while he was the runner-up in the Discus throw event. He also helped his company MAS Holdings to emerge overall champions at the meet.

Fernando was an outstanding athlete even during his school days at St. Joseph’s College, Maradana where he was the captain of College athletic team in 2011.

He had also gone on to represent Sri Lanka in athletics as a schoolboy and that was enough to receive National Colours for athletics. The College recognized his achievements so much that they awarded him with the Josephian Blue in 2010.

This is not the first time that Fernando won this award as he had achieved this at the championship last time too. Lakshan Fernando is the son of retired Senior DIG Roshan

Fernando who was a top athlete himself during his days at Royal College.

Dilruk Nilantha is Lakshan

Fernando’s coach who was behind his success in athletics from his school days. (TBR)
