Kandy is the nearest big city to my village. I often go there for various purposes, it happened that yesterday. When our bus passed through the Mahaiyawa Bokkuwa (culvert), it was a rush hour. Our bus was caught in a traffic jam and that gave me enough time to watch the interesting scenes of the city.
Kandy is a busy and beautiful city, surrounded by lofty mountains. It is one of the important tourist cities and with famous Dalada Maligawa.
I could see many people window shopping as the shops are filled with new things of beauty. It’s interesting to see the traffic police patiently regulating the flow of traffic and pedestrians.
I heard the street hawkers shouting at the top of their voices trying to attract the attention of the passers - by to see their wares.
Tourists from far off lands were strolling, keenly watching everything. I saw beggars with stretched out hands crying, seeking some money. Some beggars with melodious voices sang their tale of woe. When I see all these, I always feel that city life makes the people lose their balance. I prefer village life to city life as nothing is more valuable than the calm and quiet of a rural setting in these days of a fast moving life.
