EDUCATION AND HOSPITALITY PATHWAYS YOU CAN TRUST AT SEGI UNIVERSITY & COLLEGES

21 October, 2022

Since its inception in 1977, SEGi University & Colleges has diligently aggrandised its group of institutions into what it is known today – one of Malaysia's premier and largest private higher education providers. It is home to approximately 18,000 students from nearly 100 countries across five campuses in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Sarawak.

Having attained nearly 50 years of excellence, SEGi is recognised for delivering affordable, quality education in line with its brand promise, "The Best In You, Made Possible." All programmes offered are designed to provide a smoother pathway to students' career of choice, from Pre-U to Postgraduate. Adult learners can upskill their potential with various Micro-Credential courses and earn digital badges to enhance their work profile.

SEGi's portfolio of internationally recognised programmes include Health Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, Business & Accounting, Psychology, Communication Studies, Creative Arts & Design, Music, Education, Hospitality & Tourism, Information Technology, Engineering, Law, and Languages.

Each programme is complemented by a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities and well-equipped infrastructure, supported by academics who are active researchers, consultants, and professionals in their respective specialisations with a wealth of practical knowledge to optimise your learning experience.

Through its longstanding partnerships with global university partners from the USA, UK and Australia, students are assured of receiving world-class tertiary education and the option to transfer overseas via its Student Mobility Programme. Graduates of Double Degree programmes will not only receive two parchments (SEGi and Global University Partner) and increase their marketability in local and international job markets.

SEGi's strong presence is well-recognised, having received numerous accolades from MOHE (SETARA and MyQuest for both university and colleges, respectively), which afforded it the status as the "Most Wins Private Institution" for the assessment year 2018/2019. It has also attained 3-Stars rating in the Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA) 2019. As a group, SEGi has retained a high graduate employability rate of 95% as of 2020, with 48 programmes achieving a 100% graduate employability rate.

In the international arena, SEGi placed 9th in the AppliedHE Private University Ranking: ASEAN 2022 and ranked among the top 45% of the 2021 QS World University Rankings: Asia. Most notably, it has achieved an overall QS 5 Stars Plus rating (Year 2022 – 2024) for attaining QS 5 Stars rating in eight evaluations. SEGi is one of only 20 universities worldwide and one of only two Malaysian universities to have been awarded this outstanding accolade.

Hospitality Programmes

While traditional brick-and-mortar institutions may still be relevant, SEGi believes in going beyond the traditional academic setting to bring the best quality education, more so for students who are venturing into hospitality, one of world's fastest-growing industries.

In moulding students into educated and well-trained professionals who can deliver first-class services, SEGi offers numerous Hospitality programmes, including a Bachelor of Hospitality Management (Hons), a double degree with the University of Central Lancashire, UK; and BSc (Hons) International Tourism & Hospitality Management (3+0) with University of Sunderland, UK. Through its collaborations with these reputable British universities, students will have a globalised learning experience, attaining outstanding undergraduate degrees while remaining in the region.

The programmes' curriculum is co-designed, co-delivered and co-assessed with local and international industry players from various fields. The "Industry Into The Classroom" is a signature concept of SEGi that allows students to learn and work on real-life industry projects in addition to their day-to-day classes. Case in point, Faizul Hazly Ghazali, MAMEE-Double Decker Executive Chef who headed the halal kitchen operations at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, regularly conducts culinary classes as a module for the Hospitality programmes.

By designing its programmes to be industry-driven with academic know-how, students will have direct and indirect exposure to the industry from the classroom. For instance, SEGi has collaborated with Malaysia Airlines to develop a Christmas menu served between 24 to 31 December 2021 to passengers travelling from Kuala Lumpur to London, Australia, New Zealand and selected ASEAN and domestic routes. The menu was also available for guests at the domestic Golden Lounge Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

SEGi's bespoke undergraduate degrees divulge a diverse range of contemporary topics in Hospitality and Tourism globally, such as Hospitality Computerised Systems, Consumer Behaviour in Hospitality, e-Commerce, Innovation and Business Strategy in Hospitality, Contemporary Issues in Hospitality and Tourism industry, and Tourism Policy Studies, etc. The syllabus for each programme is crafted specifically for students to excel in 21st century Hospitality & Tourism industry. It focuses on technology-driven subjects relevant to the industry's needs to meet domestic and international demands, drive efficiency in operations and competitiveness in the globalised market, and modern hospitality management strategies.

Education Programmes

SEGi has been a long-time advocate of early childhood education. It is the pioneer and trusted provider of Early Childhood Care and Education programmes, producing thousands of highly qualified educators since 1999.

Among its programmes are a Bachelor of Education (Hons), a double degree with University of Central Lancashire, UK, that offers specialisation in Early Childhood Education, Special Needs & Inclusive Education, Teaching English As A Second Language (TESL), and Guidance & Counselling; and, BA (Hons) Early Years Education (3+0) with University of Greenwich, UK.

SEGi's teaching and research methodologies address a wide range of education spectrums from early childhood through primary and secondary schooling and higher education. The group works with teachers, academicians, government bodies, organisations as well as industries locally and internationally to ensure its programmes are of the highest quality.

SEGi constantly expands its network of established university partners and field experts to inject new perspectives into its academic offerings. For instance, SEGi's partnership with HEI Schools, Finland, not only adds new strength to its portfolio of programmes but also makes the world's best ECCE system available to its students.

ECCE alumni have achieved many accomplishments over the years. In 2018, SEGi Alumna Petrina Shee's foundation "Dignity for Children" won the 2nd Sharjah International Award for Refugee Advocacy and Support. The then-US President Barack Obama visited the foundation while touring Malaysia in 2015. In 2019, SEGi Alumna Ifham Hussain was appointed Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services in the Maldives.
