ISMM was set up in October 1972 and incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1981.

ISMM is affiliated to the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) based in the UK, the National Association of Purchasing Management Inc., (NAPM) in USA and the International Trade Centre (ITC) which is the technical co-operation agency of UNCTAD and WTO for operational, enterprise-oriented aspects of trade development.

In 1996, ISMM was also registered under the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC). Since the inception of the institute, ISMM has served the industry for five decades and has produced well over 25,000 supply chain professionals. ISMM is the only National Body to train the supply chain professionals throughout the country.

Supply Chain is one sector, without which it is impossible to imagine the status of the world today. In the midst of the chaos brought on by the pandemic, the supply chain has turned out to be a blessing.

ISMM is currently playing a vital role in the development of Sri Lanka. It is important that the professionals gain the theory, knowledge and the skills of the subject to perform well in the job.

ISMM is in the process of developing a Master’s Program in Supply Chain Management in collaboration with a government university in Sri Lanka and further exploring the possibilities of launching on-line courses mainly to Sri Lankans employed in the Middle East and other regions.
