Air Badminton to come alive again

Sri Lanka Badminton launched the Air Badminton on Thursday at the Decathlon premises in Battaramulla. This will be named as the Air Badminton as it will be played outdoor giving an opportunity for many to take part in the sport.

At present Air Badminton has become Global sport throughout the world with the Governing body giving it sanction even to conduct the sport internationally. Already many Western and Middle Eastern countries have picked up the game. Western countries such as Italy, Spain, Netherlands and France are conducting the game on a serious level.

In Sri Lanka a few decades ago before indoor Badminton was introduced it was played by many schools as it needed only little bit of space.

This helped them to carry on with the game but climatic conditions differ from place to place playing with lighter shuttle cocks not possible in our country. Air Badminton will definitely make the way locals in outstations too make their way to appear in national Tournaments too in the very near future. Badminton Sri Lanka plans to arrange a national Championship in this format which could lead for our Shuttlers to enter the international competitions.

Air Badminton can be played in most parts of the country and at the same this also got off the ground in Badulla, Gurutalawa, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Hambantota districts joining the launching ceremony concurrently along with Colombo activities.

Rohan de Silva addressing the gathering said this move taken by SLB with the introduction of Air Badminton Schools Badminton Association will have to play a vital role in promoting the sport. “If these persons take the responsibility to do the needful we can assure that we will be able to find the best talent from all parts of the country”, he said.

According to the world governing body they have made a change to the doubles allowing an additional player making it three players. To showcase this new concept of three players the president of SLB Rohan de Silva and vice president Roshan Fernando played a three member game which was won by the president’s team comprising of Bakmini and Thilini while Roshan had the services from Chandrika and Rismi.
