Excise Dept rakes in over Rs. 250 m in seven months

Illegal liquor, foreign liquor, harmful drugs, opium, cannabis and tobacco worth over Rs. 250 million were seized by officials of the Excise Department countrywide during the past seven months.

Around 15,290 suspects have been taken in for questioning. Among them, 2,874 suspects are females, Senior Excise Officer in Kurunegala, K. Jayamaha told the Sunday Observer.

He said the Excise Department conducted 14,562 raids by deploying about 2,100 officers to arrest the suspects and seize the illegal liquor and narcotics.
