
Royal College, Colombo and Mahawatta Maha Vidyalaya, Kandy emerged boys and girls champions respectively at the fifth National Junior Fencing Championship 2022 held at the Digana Sports Complex in Kandy.
Conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Fencing Association and sponsored by the National Association of Fencing in Sri Lanka, 134 students from 32 schools from Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Puttalam, Kegalle, Kurunegala and Kandy districts took part.
There were three event categories - foil, saber and epee. The age grops were Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 for boys and girls.
Mahawatta Maha Vidyalaya, Kandy were runners-up in the boys category with Wickramasheela Maha Vidyalaya, Giriulla finishing in third position.
Saranath Maha Vidyalaya, Kuliyapitiya were runners-up in the girls category with Wickramasheela Maha Vidyalaya, Giriulla placed third.
Methul Kahadugoda of Royal College was adjudged the best fencer (boys) while Prarthana Senadeera of Pilawala National School, Kandy was the best fencer (girls).
P Punchi Bandara, Director-Finance Central Provincial Council and Maj. Gen. Samantha Silva, Commander Security Forces (Central) were the chief guests at the opening ceremony. Maj. Gen. Kalpa Sanjeewa, General Officer Commanding 11 Division Kandy was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
