One hundred buses imported to Sri Lanka by Lanka Ashok Leyland, a Government affiliated company will be leased to the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) to transport schoolchildren.
Following a proposal by Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena to the Cabinet, it will be implemented as a pilot project. The Ministry of Transport will implement the program.
The project will ease traffic congestion in Colombo city caused by private vans, cars and other vehicles. This would also reduce the transport fees of schoolchildren.
Based on the success of this project, it has been planned to deploy buses in other provinces too in the future. The Sisu Seriya and other school services run by the National Transport Commission will also run in the same manner.
