Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha has already obtained Cabinet approval to fill nearly 22,000 teacher vacancies that exist in schools countrywide at present.
The graduates who were recruited to the Government Service in 2018, 2019 and 2020 under the Graduates Employment Scheme would be appointed to provincial schools and national schools to meet the current shortage of school teachers.
Those who are interested in teaching and who are below 35 years of age are to be recruited in due course to the Sri Lanka Teaching Service. It has been found that about 8,000 teachers are now needed to fill the present vacancies in Provincial Council schools countrywide said Kurunegala District Director of Education W. M. Balasooriya speaking at a meeting of Government school heads of both Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts of the North Western Province held at the Kurunegala District Education office on Thursday.
He said that in addition, the Minister of Education has assured to fill the present vacancies of school heads too in a short period of time to improve the quality of education towards the student population.
At present, about 9,560 provincial schools are functioning countrywide .
