Brian Sonali, a student of Siri Perakum Sinhala Vidyalaya, Kotagala created history by winning a gold medal at the Donald Munasinghe Challenge Trophy School Girls Boxing Championship.
She defeated SV Muthumali of Don Pedric College, Horana to win the under 15 years 37-39kg weight class.
Sonali thanked the school’s Vice Principal (Extra curricular Activities) Lakmini Lasantika and coach S Sebastian, an English teacher for her maiden success.
Assistant Director of Education Nuwara Eliya Educational Zone Susantha Weerasena congratulated the enthusiasm and dedication of the school vice principal and coach to develop boxing.
“I introduced boxing to many schools in Nuwara Eliya. Siri Perakum Sinhala Vidyalaya took a lot of interest to promote boxing thanks to the efforts of these two individuals. Producing a gold medal on debut is a reward for their efforts,” said Weerasena, a former champion product of Peradeniya MMV, past president of the Schools Boxing Association and a respected international referee/judge.
