Several far-reaching changes have been proposed in the school education system from 2023-2024.
The number of compulsory subjects for Government school candidates at the GCE (OL) examination from 2024 would be limited to seven.
However, these proposals which are still under discussion will be considered for implementation at national level, said Senior Director of Education of the Kurunegala district, W.M. Balasooriya. He told a meeting of Government school heads of the Kurunegala district that the school curriculum would do away with text and instead, the students will be taught via well-designed modules. Effective teaching methods would also be introduced and the possibility to extend the present school duration per day by 30 minutes to cover the lessons missed by students during the past two years due to the pandemic, would also be explored. Balasooriya said Cabinet approval would be sought in due course prior to implementing the proposed measures.
The question papers of the GCE(OL) examination in 2024 would be designed under the proposed module system and candidates would be given only 50 marks for each question paper. However, the proposed changes in the educational field will be implemented only after receiving Cabinet approval, he said.
