SJB Leader backtracks on NCM?

9 April, 2022

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya(SJB) will take up the No Confidence Motion which has been mooted by the Opposition against the Government, for discussion at the SJB Parliamentary Group Meeting today.

SJB National Organiser, Tissa Attanayake told the Sunday Observer that a date to hand over the NCM to the Speaker will be discussed at the upcoming meeting which will be presided over by SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa.

Attanayake said that the SJB Leader had not signed the NCM so far but denied rumours that he had refused to support it. News websites reported yesterday that Premadasa had refused to back it since the SJB lacked enough numbers in the House to get it passed.

“This will be a test for the SLPP dissidents to see where they stand and for the Government to prove that they have the majority in Parliament,” Attanayake said.

The SJB has called for the resignation of the President and the Government before agreeing to any interim arrangement, and said it will move the NCM against the Government if this demand is not met.

Lakshman Kiriella, Gayantha Karunatilleke and Tissa Attanayake were the first three signatories to the NCM. The National Organiser said he was not aware of the number of signatures collected so far.
