Sri Lankans outplay Indians at UAE volleyball

The ninth annual volleyball championship organized by Volleylife Sports Club (VSC) run by Sri Lankans domiciled in the UAE to coincide with the 74th Independence Day saw the VSC clinch the Jinadasa Memorial Trophy.

It was a Championship also contested by foreigners in the UAE from nine countries including Pakistan and India and five other Asian countries. The Championship was sponsored by a Sri Lankan company Nirmana Cargo.

The Sri Lankans were able to outplay all the teams in the first round and qualified to play the final against India the favourites at this championship. Volleylife spikers did well in the final which was to be played as a five setter but the Sri Lankans posing a big challenge to the Indians won the final in straight sets (3-0) to seal victory and took the coveted trophy on offer.

Volleylife Sports Club’s Mahela and Tharusha were the outstanding performers at the final which brought them victory. Mahela was declared as the Best Attacker while Tharusha was adjudged as the Most Valuable Player of the Championship.

Buddika and Priyankara received the Best Setter and Best Libero Awards respectively.

Only the Best Blocker and Best Server Awards were presented to Pradev and Fauram from the Indian team called the Big Mart Sports Club.
