Ukraine: Two Sri Lankan students to reach Poland

27 February, 2022

The two Sri Lankan students who were evacuated from the violence ripped Ukraine were close to the Poland border yesterday evening, diplomatic sources said.

The two boys who ignored advice from Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Turkey accredited to Ukraine, to leave the country before violence escalated, reached out to the Embassy last week, seeking help to return home.

“Their security is our main concern and they will be handed over to the officials of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Poland after they cross the border,” official sources said. The students will be flown to Colombo from Poland.

Russian troops entered Ukraine on Thursday and have been advancing towards the capital Kyiv on several fronts. The military action launched on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s orders is trying to overthrow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the Embassy, nearly 50 Sri Lankans are still in Ukraine but those who wanted to leave the country have all been repatriated and the last to leave are the two students who are now near the Poland border point.
