Suspects will be brought to court - Defence Secretary

16 January, 2022

Defence Secretary Retired General Kamal Gunaratne assured that the suspects linked to the Borella Church hand grenade incident will be brought before courts shortly.

He gave this assurance while in Kandy yesterday to pay homage to chief prelates of Malwathu and Asgiriya chapters.

Speaking to the media later, he said the investigations have gone deep and uncovered many details of this incident and this information will be released to media before long. He urged not to criticise the officials and the way the investigations are being conducted as it would only harm the process.

Being questioned by the media, he said it was not ethical to ask the IGP to remove his coat and go home, referring to Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith’s media conference last week.

The Defence Secretary said he was aware that the IGP was doing a good job with the hand grenade incident at All Saints’ Church, Borella. “Criticism is welcome at the conclusion of the investigations but it is too early to pass judgements now,” he added.
