Sri Lanka’s volleyball players made history winning their first ever international title while participating in the Central Asia Volleyball Championship in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The team arrived in the island on Tuesday with the president of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVBF) Kanchana Jayaratne welcoming the victorious players on their arrival at the airport. The Sri Lanka women’s team also performed well to a lesser extent taking the second runner-up position after playing five matches.

Methma Wasanthapriya the skipper of the team for the Championship was a proud man who received the fullest cooperation from all team members to achieve the historic victory.

On their way to victory the Sri Lankans had to face Uzbekistan, Nepal and Bangladesh in the first round and defeated the host Bangladesh in the final by three sets to one to become Champions in the Central Asian region.

Sri Lankan volleyball players have participated in many Asian regional tournaments and won a few matches but have never reached a final in the past at any international championship. This too is a great achievement with the guidance of Wasanthapriya the new skipper.

Mahesh Indeewara Bandara played a major role throughout the championship and was declared as the best player which is also a great achievement by a Sri Lankan at international level to date.

He was well supported by other members of the team.

The women’s team performed well after losing the first game to Nepal as they fought back strongly to overcome Kyrgyzstan 2-3, beat Maldives 3-0, beat Bangladesh 3-0 and again lost to Uzbekistan 2-3. Their three wins helped them to be placed as the second runner-up.

General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation accompanied the team as the manager on tour.
