Man dies at Wanawasala ‘hoodoo crossing’

A man died on the spot after his car rammed into an oncoming express train at an unprotected railway crossing at Wanawasala shortly after midday yesterday, police said. They said the Colombo bound Uththara Devi, that had left Kankesanthurai earlier in the day, was also damaged in the incident.

The victim was described as a 47-year-old father of three and was a resident of Dipitigoda in Wanawasala.

It was only in March last year that ten soldiers died at the same spot after their bus crashed into an express train.

Residents in the area have described the spot as a ‘hoodoo crossing’ owing to the many accidents that have occurred in the past.
