Dengue on the rise - NHSL physician

2 January, 2022

There are many patients with Covid-19 and dengue these days and therefore, anyone who develops high fever, body ache and headache after receiving any dose of the Covid-19 vaccination should not ignore it because it could be dengue and not due to the booster dose, physician of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), Dr. Upul Dissanayake said.

He told a press briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau in Colombo on Friday that the family doctor should decide on what medical test should be conducted to diagnose whether it is Covid-19 or dengue as both have similar symptoms.

Dr. Dissanayake said that when all eligible Sri Lankan citizens received the booster dose, Covid-19 will become another flu. It is the responsibility of all Sri Lankans to get the booster dose as soon as possible without giving into various myths.

These days there is a significant increase in the number of dengue patients, more than Covid-19 patients and, therefore, anyone with fever should not wait blaming it on the booster dose because it could be dengue. Mosquito coils do not prevent dengue. Cleaning mosquito breeding sites is essential. Applying mosquito repellents and wearing clothes covering the body is helpful, he said.
