Following the drama-laden Formula 1 season finale at Abu Dhabi, Lewis Hamilton has officially been knighted.
He joins the ranks of fellow knights like Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart. Knighting the 36-year old Hamilton was Charles, Prince of Wales.
If you’re surprised about Hamilton’s knighting only just happening, you’re probably not the only one.
Hamilton’s name appeared on the 2021 “New Year Honours” list.
While this list was announced at the end of last year, Hamilton’s official knighting ceremony only took place after the end of the 2021 Formula 1 season—three days after his controversial loss to Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen.
The knighting ceremony also took place in the shadow of his team’s potential challenge against Hamilton’s loss at the Abu Dhabi GP.
Even though Hamilton didn’t usurp the legendary Michael Schumacher’s championship totals at the end of the 2021 season, his accolades are noteworthy.
Alongside matching Schumacher’s championship totals, Hamilton holds the title for most race wins, most pole positions, and most podium finishes, to name a few. (Autoweek)
