Consecration of Believers Eastern Church Colombo Cathedral

The consecration service of the Cathedral of the Believers Eastern Church was held on November 23. His Grace Samuel Mor Theophilus and His Grace Geevarghese Mor Makariose along with the clergy consecrated the cathedral in the midst of the faithful and well-wishers. The cathedral was dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle.

This was followed by a public event with the participation of MPs such as Dr. Kavinda Jayawardana, Premnath C. Dolewatta, and Dr. Gayeshan Nawandana, Senior DIG Deshabandu Thennakoon, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Indika Hapugoda, Presidents Media Unit Assistant Director Thilan Punchihewa, Prime Minister’s Secretary for Parliamentary affairs Udith Lokubandara, and other guests.

Believers Eastern Church is rooted in the Orthodox faith and connected to 2000 years of heritage. The spiritual head of Believers Eastern Church is Metropolitan Bishop Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan I.

Metropolitan along with 25 bishops give spiritual leadership to the Church. The Church is spread out in 16 countries with 81 dioceses and 15,000 parishes. The Believers Eastern Church in Colombo lays claim to a history of 30 years. Giving pride of place to social and spiritual uplift, the Church lent support when the country needed help, after the tsunami in 2004 and during the recent spate of floods, coordinating with all initiatives involving child development, poverty reduction, education, women’s empowerment, sanitation, water, health, sustainability, environmental protection, and vocational training.
