“Health guidelines should take pride of place”

12 December, 2021

There is no need to spend heavily and attend an event where people do not follow health guidelines and fall victim to Covid-19. People should think twice before paying high prices for tickets to participate in an event, Deputy Director General, Public Health Services (II), Dr. Susie Perera said.

She told a press briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau in Colombo on Friday that people receive many invitations these days for parties, and other events. But there is no point in spending money and contracting Covid-19. The country cannot face another `grave fall'.

She said that these days, the Health Ministry receives many requests from event organisers to increase the number of people for functions. But permission cannot be given because Sri Lanka still does not know the exact behaviour of Omicron.

“The country faced a huge setback due to the previous Covid-19 waves. We cannot let the country go back to those tough times again on any grounds. It is the responsibility of all to celebrate the festival without pushing the country and the people into danger again. More positive cases mean more ICU admissions,” she said.
