Man beaten to death

MULLERIYAWA: A man was beaten to death during a botched burglary in a house in Maligagodella, Mulleriyawa.

The man was a part of a three-member gang that stormed the house in the night and attempted to rob the place.

The residents raised screams that brought neighbours rushing to the scene.

The man was caught by neighbours and fatally beaten while his accomplices fled on a motorcycle.

Chain snatchers arrested

ATHURUGIRIYA: Two chain snatchers were arrested after a lengthy investigation by police following an incident on October 15.

The incident captured by nearby security cameras showed the woman fallen on the ground while one suspect relieved her of her necklace.

Investigators later found out that the pair was involved in a series of such thefts and were being sought by more than one police station in the region.

One suspect also had an open warrant against him.

A motorcycle and a gold necklace were recovered following the arrest of the twosome.

Van driver bolts with Rs. 60 million

HATTON: The driver of a van who bolted with Rs. 60 million belonging to a private bank was rounded up on the same day before he could spend even a single cent of the loot.

The van was transporting the money to be deposited at an ATM in Hatton when the incident took place.

The suspect decided to drive away with the cash after the bank official and the private security guard had alighted from the vehicle.

The suspect was, however, rounded up several hours later by police with the help of satellite technology.

The 32-year-old suspect is also alleged to have beaten his father-in-law and critically wounded him as well in a frenzied attack.

The suspect was later tracked down to an abandoned house where he was hiding.

Gun packing woman held

NUGEGODA: A woman was arrested along with two foreign manufactured guns from her residence in Nugegoda.

Investigators are probing to ascertain as to how the weapons had entered the country and for what purpose.

The police raided the woman’s house on a tip-off.

The two weapons had been manufactured in Spain, investigators later found out.

Cop freezes with ‘Ice’

RAJAGIRIYA: A 42-year-old policeman was taken into custody along with 10 grams of the narcotic ‘Ice’.

The suspect policeman of the Welikada Police Station was tracked down following conversations on his mobile phone with the help of satellite technology.

He was later handed over to the Welikada Police for follow up investigations.

Woman dies as son-in-law goes berserk

ANGURUWATOTA: An enraged man is alleged to have beaten his mother-in-law to death over a festering domestic dispute with his wife.
