Painting exhibition

7 November, 2021

The painting exhibition, Meaning of Simulation II by JC Rathnayake, which commenced on November 4 at The Paradise Road Galleries, Colombo, will conclude on December 16.

J.C. Rathnayake

Born in Polonnaruwa, Rathnayake studied at the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo. In this sequel to his 2019 exhibition titled ‘Meaning of Simulation’, the artist continues his investigation of the subjects of globalisation, the climate crisis and digital culture.

JC Rathnayake makes paintings that give the appearance of calm and meditation with the depth of texture and colour. His process of creating works involves a multidisciplinary practice with his base that lies in printmaking. The artist breaks boundaries with his play on acrylic, collage and burning his medium to command an aesthetic that is an extraordinary visual representation of pattern, repetition and rhythm.

‘Meaning of Simulation II’ is JC Rathnayake’s 9th solo exhibition. “People are stuck in a society that lacks essence. People are stuck in their own dreams. I use the human figure in my pattern to evoke the spirit of humankind, to connect with our essence,” Rathnayake said.
