How to make a jack-o-lantern and a witch's hat

31 October, 2021

To carve a jack-o-lantern you will need

• 1 pumpkin
• 1 medium serving spoon, to scoop out the seeds
• 1 medium knife, to cut out the stem of the pumpkin
• 1 small knife, to cut out the design on the pumokin
• Newspaper, to cover the working surface
• Medium bowl, to empty the seeds and pulp into
• 1 marker to sketch the face on the pumpkin
• 1 candle to light the jack-o-lantern from the inside
• 1 lighter to light the candle

Method

I) Cover the working surface with the newspaper.
II) With the medium knife, cut a hole around the stem at a 45-degree angle towards the centre of the pumpkin. If you haven’t cut at an angle, the stem will fall into the pumpkin.
Make sure that you save the stem.
III) Using the medium serving spoon, scoop out the seeds and the pulp (the orange
stringy material) inside the pumpkin.
IV) On the most rounded side of your pumpkin, sketch the face you want on the
pumpkin with the marker.
V) Using the small knife, cut at a perpendicular angle (90-degree angle) along the chosen design. Remove the loose pieces of the pumpkin and discard them into the medium bowl.
Wipe off the marker drawings when you have finished cutting out the design.
VI) Light the candle with the lighter and place it inside the jack-o-lantern. Put the stem back on.
VII) Place the jack-o-lantern where desired.
