
Girl dies in freak incident
MIRISSA: An-11-year-old girl died in a freak incident while playing ‘dress up’ with her elder sister at their home in Mirissa, Matara last week.
The girl, who was not named, had apparently suffocated to death after she got entangled in her mother’s saree.
The victim was a student at St. Thomas’ Girls’ High School, Matara.
Held for stealing dog
GALLE: A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the alleged theft of a Doberman dog at Thelikada in Galle.
According to police the suspect was nabbed after he had advertised the dog for sale on a social media platform.
The advertisement alerted the dog’s owner who immediately brought it to the notice of the area police.
The price of the dog was given as Rs. 60,000 in the advertisement.
The suspect is also alleged to have earlier stolen four chickens from the same area, according to police.
Ex-clerk grows cannabis
KOTTAWA: A former Government clerk was nabbed last week after police found a cannabis plantation in the man’s backyard at Horahena, Kottawa.
The cannabis plantation was cleverly concealed in a banana plot and police were led to the spot following a tip-off.
Several cannabis plants, four feet in height, were seized during the raid.
The 67-year-old suspect was a former clerical hand at the Ministry of Sports, it has been found.
Man held in online sex scam
RATNAPURA: A man was taken into custody in connection with an online sex scandal at Kalawana in Ratnapura.
The suspect is alleged to have placed female sex workers ‘on sale’ in discreet online advertisements.
He was tracked down by sleuths from the Criminal Investigation Department.
