The Kandy Esela perahera

15 August, 2021

The first Kumbal perahera of the Kandy Esala perahera, a historical procession held annually to pay homage to the Buddha’s Most Sacred Tooth relic, paraded the streets on Friday night (August 13). This year, like last year, the Esala festival is being held without the participation of spectators, under the bio bubble concept, due to the Covid-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. The Randoli perahera will parade the streets on August 18. Here the golden casket carrying the Most Sacred Tooth Relic being carried by the gaily caparisoned tusker, Katharagama Wasana accompanied by tuskers Buruma Raja and Sinha Raja.
