SJB protest

11 July, 2021

A silent protest organised by the main Opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) on the theme “Secure Democracy - Protect Human Freedom” was held in front of the Independence Square, Colombo on Friday(July 9).

Representatives of organisations affiliated to the SJB and civil society organisations including the Samagi Tharuna Balawegaya and Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya also participated.

SJB Parliamentarian Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said that there are weak people in the Government who cannot make the country recover from the present situation. Fonseka said that the Government has no vision to rebuild the country except to deceive the people. He said that an environment will be created in the future to oust this Government and help the people recover from this catastrophe.

The SJB on Friday filed three Fundamental Rights petitions before the Supreme Court on the arrest of protestors and trade union leaders under quarantine regulations.

The three petitions were filed by SJB Parliamentarians Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Harshana Rajakaruna and Mayantha Dissanayake.

Opposition lawmakers alleged that the Police had used the quarantine regulations issued by the Director-General of Health Services to suppress freedom of expression and unjustly arrest persons involved in peaceful protests.
