
Burglar clubbed to death
Wattala: A 32-year-old man who was sought by police in connection with several robberies was allegedly clubbed to death while attempting to burgle a house in Wattala on Thursday night.
Two male occupants of the house had allegedly beaten the suspect with a cricket bat after he had broken into the house late at night.
The suspect succumbed to his injuries before admission to hospital.
Initial investigations have revealed that the man was wanted in connection with several burglaries in the Wattala, Kiribathgoda and Kadawatha areas.
Cyber-sex scam: executive held
PITABEDDARA: A marketing officer of a leading mobile company was arrested in connection with an alleged cyber sex scam involving several schoolgirls.
It has been found that the suspect had obtained the phone numbers of schoolgirls by promising them free zoom and other packages.
Later, the girls had been allegedly sexually exploited via the internet and nude pictures of the victims had been obtained by the suspect.
The suspect, a 28-year-old resident of Thambuththegama, had been working with the mobile company for over two years.
The suspect was traced following a complaint made to police by the principal of a school in Pitabeddara.
Poachers arrested
WILPATTU: Eight people were rounded up for alleged poaching of wild animals deep inside the Wilpattu National Park last week.
The group was arrested by officers of the Department of Wildlife and Conservation.
According to officials, the suspects were believed to be professional hunters and they were tracked down following information provided by villagers.
Lightning strikes two
WEERAKETIYA: The bodies of two fishermen struck by lightning were recovered from the Bogamuwa Lake in Weeraketiya last week.
The two bodies were found floating by villagers who had gone to the lake for a bath.
The authorities have repeatedly warned the public against using open water bodies during inclement weather and to take adequate precautions to minimise the damage that could be caused by lightning.
Hunt for murder suspect
KATARAGAMA: A hunt was launched last week for a suspect wanted in connection with the death of a 52-year-old man in Kataragama.
The suspect is alleged to have gunned down the suspect over a family dispute.
The victim who was rushed to the Debarawewa Base Hospital, succumbed to his injuries a short while after admission.
The suspect is believed to have fled deep into the Yala Wildlife National Park.
Motorist dies in freak accident
WELLAWATTE: A motorist was killed in a freak accident after several concrete blocks crashed on to his car from a high rise construction site at Suvisuddaharma Road, Wellawatte yesterday.
The victim was seated in the car that was parked by the side of the construction site when the concrete blocks came crashing down without warning.
The victim was reportedly killed on the spot.
