A replantation surgery was carried out successfully by Dr. Illanchelian Pallavan by surgically fixing back a hand of a man severed in a sword attack on Wednesday.
According to Jaffna Teaching Hospital sources it was a tremendous surgery carried out by Dr. Pallavan who was supported by a team of doctors and operating theatre staff and the surgery which commenced at 10 p.m. on Wednesday concluded at 4 a.m. on Thursday.
The sources also said that it was the first time that a severed hand had been surgically reattached successfully following arduous surgery.
Dr. Pallavan is a product of the Jaffna Medical Faculty according to sources.
The victim, a male from Kondavil, Jaffna was rushed to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital soon after he was attacked by sword-wielding gangsters.
The surgery while highlighting the efficiency of the lead surgeon has on the other hand outlined the threat posed by the sword-wielding notorious gangsters in Jaffna who have been posing a challenge to law and order in the region for the past several years following the end of the turbulent period in the North.
