The invention and evolution of cars will always remain a fascinating, timeless story to both the young and old. Today, Seth Ranwala gives us glimpses into this fascinating story.
All the way from Karl Benz’s first car to Elon Musk’s cyber truck, the automobile industry has grown fast and wide. The first car scared everyone, not because of its hideous looks and size but because at the time people believed that technology was made by witches and the devil.
But this didn’t stop Karl Benz from making the first car in 1885. The people of Germany had to open their eyes to this new innovation. Therefore, Bertha Benz drove the first car around the country in August, 1888. Nothing went as planned, the car broke down several times and Bertha had without knowing driven the wrong way. Nevertheless, Bertha had been successful in her mission even after driving only a little over 60 miles.
As time went on people became used to cars and new inventions. The in car record player and something called the chin alarm (a bell hanging from the driver’s chin so he does not fall asleep) came into being but none of them worked. In the 1950’s seat belts started appearing on cars to make them safer, but by the 1970’s cars got quite dangerous due to primitive air bags and Ford Pintos (the name Ford Pintos is a joke, but the cars were quite dangerous). In the 80’s cars with CD players became a trend.
By the 90’s the evolution of cars sped so fast that smaller companies fell behind, some of the features that caused it were navigation systems and emergency brakes. Then the 2000’s came around with auto driving systems and Bluetooth. Then we come to our present day where Tesla rule the world of cars, and who can blame them, the cybertruck had huge success for a little while and out of nowhere a huge number of concept cars such as the Lamborghini Vision GT, Mercedes AVTR, Bugatti Atlantic came along.
Sri Lankn legends such as Upali Wijewardene led Sri Lanaka into the industry with brands such as Upali motors and Upali aviation. With the ever elevating automobile industry transportation gets easier by the day, for this we must thank pioneers of this industry such as Ransom Olds, Walter Chrysler, Karl Benz and Henry Ford.
