
Former National cycling champion H.L Krishantha was elected president of the Sri Lanka Cycling Federation at their AGM held at the Sports Ministry Auditorium recently.
The close contest took place between two former national champions Krishantha representing Galle Cycling Association and B.J Sumanasekara from Sri Lanka Port Authority for the top post. Krishantha received 21 votes and Sumanasekera 19 votes to be elected.
Krishantha entered the cycling field for the first time from the Sri Lanka German Friendship SC and was able to win the National championship in 2000 and 2003. He also went on foreign tours as the captain of the National team in 2003. He is presently working as an MP of the Ambalangoda Predeshiya Saba.
Meanwhile, Nalin Adhikari from Gampaha district was elected the Secretary defeating HA Karunaratne also from Gampaha with a majority of 12 votes (26-14) while Jayasena Guruge was elected as the Treasurer and AM Dissanayake the Assistant Secretary.
The six vice president posts went to HW Panditharatne, Krishantha Fernando, Nishantha Piyasena, Prabath de Silva, Chandana Kandanarachchi and NH Molligoda. The other vice president’s post will be from the Schools Cycling Association. (DR)
