PS members feel police heat

BANDARAGAMA: Two Pradeshiya Sabha members were arrested and a hunt is on for a third in connection with separate incidents reported from Bandaragama, Biyagama and Baddegama.

A 44-year-old PS member of the Bandaragama Pradeshiya Sabha was taken into custody after he is alleged to have assaulted a differently-abled soldier over a personal dispute.

The suspect was later produced before a Magistrate and remanded till April 4.

In the second incident, a PS member of the Biyagama Pradeshiya Sabha was arrested after he is alleged to have forcibly entered a restaurant and damaged the premises. The suspect had been highly intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to police.

A Baddegama Pradeshiya Sabha Member is wanted in connection with illicit logging in an irrigation reserve at Dolekada, Baddegama.

The name of the PS member surfaced following the arrest of a man along with 35 timber logs and an excavator inside the reserve.

Customer bolts with jewellery box

EHILIYAGODA: A man posing off as a customer in a jewellery store and grabbed a box of gold items and bolted.

This incident was reported from the Ehiliyagoda Town.

The man clad in smart attire was pretending to sort out female jewellery when he grabbed the box with gold items and bolted.

There was nothing the shop owner could do but stare in horror as the man rode off into the heavy traffic along with an accomplice clutching tightly on to the boot.

The stolen gold was valued at Rs. 2.5 million according to the shop owner.

Public warned on counterfeit currency notes

AKKARAIPATTU: The public have been warned against counterfeit currency notes that could be circulated at rush hours during the oncoming festive season.

The warning comes after military intelligence busted a clandestine printing house that was turning out counterfeit currency notes in Akkaraipattu.

Some 124 Rs. 5000 currency bills and 20 other partially printed currency notes were seized along with equipment used in the racket.

The police have warned the public to be extra vigilant when dealing with Rs. 5000 currency notes in crowded shopping malls and other similar outlets.

Fake Sub Inspector nabbed

HOMAGAMA: A person who posed-off as a Police Sub Inspector (SI) and who posted pictures of himself on social media was nabbed in Homagama.

The 30-year-old suspect had used the police uniform to strike up several business deals with local traders among other activities.

A doctored police identity was also recovered from his residence at Rakwana.

Murder suspect’s house torched

RAMANATHANPURA: Unidentified persons torched the house of a suspect who allegedly killed a 19-year-old school boy at Ramanathanpura, Killinochchi.

The occupants were not at home at the time of the incident.

The suspect is a close relative of the girl who was maintaining a clandestine love affair with the boy.

It is believed that the suspect, angered over the love affair may have killed the boy.

Youth dies in drug dispute

GRANDPASS: A 19-year-youth was stabbed to death over a narcotic dispute at Sedawatte, Grandpass.

The victim is alleged to have had a heated argument with the suspect, that led to a bloody scuffle.

The suspect, a 41-year-old man from the same area is receiving treatment at the National Hospital under police guard.
