Reigning national chess champion Ranindu Liyanage of Ananda College proved his class by winning the eighth Sri Lankan Chess Grand Prix concluded last week at the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) headquarters.

Liyanage was the best after the first tie breaker and the Rapid Games happened since the Classical Games ended equal on points with two draws against Minul Sanjula Doluweera of Royal College.

Known as a better player in the faster version of chess, Liyanage won the first Rapid game and ended level in the second game. Liyanage earned Rs. 50,000 with a trophy and the Gold medal while Doluweera had to be content with the silver medal plus Rs. 30,000.

Theekshana Denuwan of Ananda College beat S. Sivathanujan to earn Rs. 20,000 and the bronze medal in the consolation final. Sivathanujan of Kokavil Hindu College received Rs. 10,000.

A total of 12 leading chess players participated in this Grand Prix. (DR)
