The Government yesterday dismissed rumours of a Cabinet re-shuffle in the new year saying the Ministers needed more time to show performance in their allocated subjects.
Co-Cabinet spokesman Udaya Gammanpila told the Sunday Observer that the Cabinet of Ministers who were appointed in August last year needed more time to show any performance in their given subjects, so the Government was unlikely to think of a re-shuffle at this point of time. “This is news to me, I don’t think there will be a re-shuffle anytime soon,” he said but added that a re-shuffle can be done anytime at the discretion of the President and the Prime Minister.
A senior official at the President’s office also denied that there is going to be Cabinet re-shuffle soon. “The rumour was given wings when Dr. Sudharshani Fernandopulle was given a different portfolio,” he said.
“The reason behind that decision was President’s expectation to give her more responsibilities in the field of health to match her talents as a doctor, so he wanted to make use of her talents,’’ the official added.
