‘16 Days of Activism against Gender based Violence’ to kick-off on Dec. 10

The UN Secretary-General’s ‘UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women’ campaign is marking the ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence’ on December 10 under the global theme, ‘Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!’

With the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, violence against women, especially domestic violence has been amplified. Many countries have strengthened actions and resources in the domestic front to address outstanding and new issues related to the pandemic with the aim of eliminating violence against women. “Orange events” are taking place around the world from International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 to Human Rights Day on December 10.

The project ‘Someone’s Daughter Vol 3.0’, the CSR project run by the Rotaract Club of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura to build awareness and raise a voice against violence against women, empowering women to fight for their rights has also joined forces with this campaign to eliminate violence against women.

Marking the end of the 16 days of activity on December 6, 8 and 10 from 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m., the project is streaming three live webinars featuring psychiatrist Dr. Kamal Jayasekara, Dr. Shanelle De Almeida the cooperate wellness Manager of Hemas Holdings and global activist Kapila Rasnayaka on three timely topics on the club’s official Facebook page.

On December 6, Dr. Kamal Jayasekara will speak on ‘The lack of sex education in Sri Lanka and its impact on violence against women’, on December 8 Dr. Shanelle De Almeida on ‘How emotional intelligence comes in handy when assuaging the psychological trauma caused by sexual harassment and gender-based violence’ and on December 10 Kapila Rasnayaka will raise awareness on ‘The hazing effect of male and female gender stereotypes and social identity’.
