University Games called off, 2021 Games early next year

16 August, 2020

The Sri Lanka University Sports Association (SLUA) has decided to abandon the University Games this year after a committee meeting last Thursday and host the 2021 event early next year.

GGU Saman Kumara, an SLUA Committee member said the decision was due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

“We discussed the matter of holding the Games but the University Grants Commission informed us that present conditions don’t permit the event to take place.

“They asked for a few more weeks to decide but we were running out of time as far as organising the Games are concerned and we decided to call if off,” said Kumara.

He said they can look forward to holding the 2021 Games early next year.

“To resolve the matter we can conduct the 2021 Games early next year,” he said.

The Inter University Games also has a separate Mega event every three years that was hosted in 2019 by the Ruhunu University and the next one will be hosted by the Eastern University in 2022. (KI)
