Making the best of the Covid–19 lockdown

26 July, 2020

As the country went into lockdown, children found themselves with an indefinite holiday. A few days later, many schools started online classes and sent study packs, but still the children faced an unusual situation. They had much free time with the added bonus of having parents and the whole family at home, but were restricted and could not hang out with friends or visit them and relatives. But children are resilient and resourceful, and they found their own creative solutions to the lockdown. We feature here how some of these children spent lockdown creatively and fruitfully.

How I spent my time during the lockdown?

My friends have all been asking me, what I had been up to during this lockdown .......

Well, what could anyone do?

Nothing, I guess. ....

My friends have been up to a lot of incredible things but, here is my list:

The first few weeks swung by slowly becoming more boring than ever.

I always text my friends for a couple of hours on most days, so it didn’t become that boring!

But, then after school started online classes, things became a bit more difficult since there were a lot of assignments to be completed. ??

Completing the assignments wasn’t that bad.

At least, during these online classes I could meet my friends!

But, before all this online classes started we were sent all our work on g-mail.

After a few weeks, we began contact by downloading Google Classroom and submitting all our work there.

I practise the piano and sang whenever I could.

I also watered all the plants in my garden!

Finally, I snuggled under my bed covers and relaxed by watching YouTube and Netflix as well. Sometimes, I even called my friends who are living abroad.

I also learnt how to knit.

This year, I made lanterns using beautiful patterned cloth.

So ......... What have you been up to?

What I did during the lockdown

During the Coronavirus lockdown, I started bird watching. Every day I had visits from a brown feathered bird that had a white tummy. My mother told me it was a tailor bird.

The next day I got a big surprise! The tailor bird was building a nest! I was so happy that day.

Birds hadn’t built nests in our garden for a long time.

Another day, while the mother bird had gone away, I had a sneak peek inside the bird’s nest.

Guess what I saw? Two featherless pink baby tailor birds! Each day the baby birds grew bigger and bigger.

First, they started growing dark grey feathers on their wings and then all over their body.

One day, while I was watching the nest from a distance, all of a sudden, the baby birds started flying all over the garden! That’s when I saw that there were three of them! One even landed on my foot! The first baby bird managed to fly over the garden wall. One of the parents went to join it.

Then the next baby bird flew over the wall too.

The other parent went to join it. The last baby was left alone.

I hoped the mother would come to help him and she did. She fed him a bug and flew away.

I went to get some water and when I came back the baby bird was gone!
