Senior officials, past presidents, vice patrons, trustees and coaches of Havelock Sports Club have accused its Club Committee of violating its Constitution, values and traditions in the run-up to their election of office-bearers that was scheduled to be held yesterday.

The Club Committee was also accused of “poor judgement” and forced to withdraw their resignation from the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU).

“The withdrawal of their letter was seen by many as the first steps taken in addressing the misfortunes and mismanagement of the club over the past years.

“The senior members who called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) were shown overwhelming support in numbers from the general membership,” an official of Havelocks told the Sunday Observer.

Havelocks like several clubs have been struggling to make ends meet due to what the club said were “severe financial deficits”.

Rugby’s on-field action came to a halt in March due to the coronavirus pandemic but its administration has been heating up with clubs and Provincial Unions gearing up to vote for a new set of officials of Sri Lanka Rugby who will govern sport’s affairs for the next two years.

Rizly Illyas, the current deputy president of Sri Lanka Rugby, is tipped to win next month’s election for the top post of president replacing the incumbent Lasitha Gunaratne.
