PCR tests exceed 50,000

24 May, 2020

Sri Lanka passed a landmark in PCR Testing on May 22, completing 51,094 tests. The highest number of PCR tests done within a day, 1,970 was recorded on May 22, Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said. According to Dr. Jasinghe, 1,603 PCR tests were done on May 21. At present only 439 patients receive medical treatment for Covid-19 while 620 individuals who had been affected by the virus have completely recovered and discharged from hospitals.

Dr. Jasinghe said the Covid-19 death rate in the country is only 0.8 percent which is significant. The recovery rate of Sri Lanka is 58.05 percent. Over 100 among the 1,060 patients in Sri Lanka were people who came from foreign countries. The navy cluster of Covid-19 will be reduced shortly.

Only three percent from PCR tests were found positive for Covid-19 and the active and passive surveillance have proved that there is no social transmission of the virus in the country. Hence, Sri Lanka has successfully controlled Covid-19 with no Covid-19 patients reported in the open society during the past three weeks. There is no truth in certain views expressed such as, that the Covid-19 virus found in Sri Lanka is not strong and the hot weather in the country has controlled the virus, he added.
