Former Richmond College cricketer and football player, retired Colonel Malcolm Wickremasinghe, passed away last Monday barely a month after undergoing kidney surgery.
He was a member of the Richmond College team of 1974 that was captained by Ranjan Jayasinghe and played in three seasons.
His elder brother Upali Wickremasinghe was also a member of the team and later became the sports officer of the Southern Province while his younger brother Srinath also played cricket in later years and lost his life in the 2004 tsunami.
But Malcolm was also talented in football and represented the Army team and later became the secretary of the Southern Province Football Association.
He was one of the finest military officers serving in the Gemunu Watch Regiment but at the same time never distanced himself from sports promotion in the southern province when he was stationed.
