The officials of the Election Commission and the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry will meet tomorrow to discuss contingency measures for the upcoming general election which is scheduled to be held in April.
Election Commission Spokesman Channa de Silva said the Commission has not yet decided to postpone the election scheduled on April 25 due to the coronavirus scare.
He however added that if the situation gets worse, the Commission will be compelled to reschedule the date of the polls.
“We were to discuss ways and means to stay safe during the time of crisis at the meeting which was convened before the first corona patient was detected. Now the discussions will focus on other areas as well in view of the growing number of patients in the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Sajith Premadasa called for the convening of Parliament to discuss the growing health issue but Higher Education Minister and Government Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena rejected the call at a media briefing at the Information Department yesterday.
Minister Gunawardena said only the president has the power to convene Parliament after a dissolution but there was no need to do it at this stage since the Government had taken stringent measures to contain the spread of the virus.
