Biggest General Hospital in the South opens

The biggest general hospital in the Southern Province now functions in Hambantota. Although it was opened about six months ago, it remained closed due to various reasons.

The foundation for the hospital was laid by the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government. The Netherlands funded Rs.7,000 million for the project.

The hospital consists of 840 beds, operation theatres, intensive care units, an Out Patients’ Department, pharmacies, a blood transfusion unit and quarters for doctors and nurses. Work on a dialysis unit is under way.

Patients warded at the old General Hospital have been transferred to the new hospital, Acting Director of the new General Hospital, Dr. Suranga Obesekera said.
