Women’s Day - women of early royalty

8 March, 2020

There were brave, wise, women of early royalty

Who were distinguished for their selfless service and loyalty
We recall their wonderful service and their attitude
Words are inadequate to express our gratitude
Build a strong nation was what they were looking for
Based on religious harmony, putting an end to war
With understanding and blissful heart
They were ever ready to play their noble part
To name a few – Viharamaha Devi, Anula,
Soma Devi, of great significance
Have already made their mark in superior performance
In the annals of Lanka’s historic past
These ladies make us proud of our past
Thero Mahinda’s arrival takes us deep down to our culture
When Buddha Sasana was set up for Lanka’s future
After the introduction of Buddhism to our destination
Queen Anula with five hundred appealed for ordination
An example most outstanding in Sasanic History and tradition
For establishing Bhikkhuni Sasana, the Order for Women
The first recorded tsunami occurred in Kelaniya
Compelled king to send daughter afloat to sea
The ship landed in Magama, displaying the plea
She became the queen of Kavantissa and a great mother
In annals of history, Somawathie is another name
That brought into existence, great dagoba of world fame
King Dutugemunu’s aunt in Somapura
As the sacred venues away in Anuradhapura
Converted her kingdom to this sacred site
With the DakunuDalada, enshrined extremely bright
These ladies fulfilling their dreams and expectations
To Buddhism and country made an enormous contribution
