To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Zahira Old Boys’ Rugby Association (ZOBRA) has drawn up plans to stage a gala Tag Rugby Carnival today at the Zahira College ground from 8.30 am featuring 25 teams from four different categories.
ZOBRA was founded in 2009 with the sole objective of developing junior rugby at Zahira College and were able to open doors to many talented young boys.
“We are confident that the batch of young boys would enrich the game in the years to come. This tournament is the result of hard work and an opportunity for those youngsters to display their talent,” said Nazeem Ghaffoor, the Founder Member of ZOBRA at a Press conference.
The tournament will be held as a tag competition with 12 teams competing in the Under-10 and Under-12 categories. The Open Segment will feature 12 teams where each team comprises players of all age groups.
There will also be a match featuring old boys over 40 years. The two teams will be led by former rugby great Ibrahim ‘Tanker’ Hamid (former police player and Zahira coach) and Tony Amit (former Sri Lanka coach). Also expected to play are ex-players in the mould of MA Majid and members of the unbeaten team who played under Hamid.
Another match will feature ex-Sri Lanka players Asanka Rodrigo, Sudath Sampath, Duminda Silva, Rizan Saldin and Nalin Dissanayke among others.
