Chandrika’s membership: SLFP Central Committee divided

3 November, 2019

Following media reports of the readiness of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to suspend the party membership of its senior advisor and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the SLFP Central Committee is divided on a final decision, sources said.

SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara had told the media recently that the SLFP would take steps to suspend the membership of former President Kumaratunga as she had pledged her support to the New Democratic Alliance Presidential hopeful Sajith Premadasa.

Contrary to the opinion of MP Jayasekara, SLFP National Organiser MP Duminda Dissanayake told the Sunday Observer yesterday that party has not yet taken any decision with regard to Chandrika Bandaranaike’s party membership.

“We did not have time to discuss this. It occurred on Friday. We have not taken any decision to suspend her Party membership,” Dissanayake said.

Meanwhile, a frontline member of the Organisation to Protect SLFP, former Mayor of the Kaduwela Urban Council, G.H. Buddhadasa said that none of the members will be scared of MP Jayasekera’s statements.

“None of us will care what Dayasiri Jayasekara says. Moreover, we will send him off from the post of Party Secretary after November 17,”he said.
