JO calls for Pillayan’s release

25 August, 2019

Despite its stand to oppose the release of Tamil civilians arrested during Rajapaksa regime, the Joint Opposition has called for the release of former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan.

Joint Opposition MP Susantha Punchinilame said that Pillayan was held in remand prison for over four and a half years without filing cases against him.

MP Punchinilame pointed out that Pillayan’s political supporters have requested to either release him or take relevant action against him.

The MP added that they have respected and also absorbed persons who have left their terrorist activities and got involved in national politics. He also pointed out that action needs to be taken to either take legal action or release the many persons held in remand.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Defence Ruwan Wijewardene is seeking advice from the Attorney General regarding the issue.

Pillayan is accused of murdering TNA Member of Parliament Joseph Pararajasinghem. The incident took place in 2005.
