Foreign competitors are expected to participate at the ninth edition of the Sappers 4x4 Gympo to be held at the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering (SLSME), Tunkama, Embilipitiya on September 8.

The event that commenced in 2011, is once again organised and conducted this year by the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders.

The track was made in an exemplary manner that attracted many foreign drivers, including women drivers, too were seen in action. This was made possible with the local drivers participation on foreign tracks which has taken the message to those drivers. Especially the Malaysian men and women drivers are keen in taking part in these events as their country is famous for 4x4 Off Road Motor Rally events.

The track made by the SLSME, is one of the best formed for the benefit of local drivers and riders. The organisers decided to name the rally as the ‘Gympo’ with the intention of introducing the Logo which depicts a Bison named as ‘Gympo’ and the Black and white flag used for motor racing.

The track is packed with many obstacles like muddy surfaces, dusty areas, humps, down hills and water holes of nearly three feet and sharp corners.

The Rally is open only to civilian drivers and riders. The most interesting feature is that a few local women drivers who have witnessed 4x4 Rallying will come forward to challenge foreign women on this track.

The organisers expect over 100 drivers/co-drivers and over 120 riders to compete on the most suitable conditions for Rallying. The winners will be awarded trophies and cash prizes according to the organisers.

The sponsors are Senok Trade, VVK Machinery and Infotec Connect while the media partners are Lake House and Rupavahini.
